- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The main role of the Psychiatric Nurse is to conduct thorough clinical assessments, promote therapeutic communication, de-escalate mental health crisis, and working closely with multidisciplinary team.

C. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Providing essential teaching and psychoeducation to patients and family members to help them understand the dimensions of the mental illness.
- Promoting therapeutic communication and conduct thorough clinical assessments.
- Building relationships with patients, reassuring, and listening to and talking to patients.
- Fighting stigma and helping patients and their families manage it.
- Agreeing and reviewing care plans and monitoring progress.
- Providing direct care to patients, which includes facilitating social and emotional needs.
- Supervising medication schedules and evaluating patient progress.
- Assessing treatment progress and success at case conferences and meetings.
- Educating patients and family members on how to create a supportive environment for the patients to return to for long-term care and recovery.
- Maintaining a safe environment through the use of monitoring devices and restraining techniques where deemed necessary.
- Providing social support for patients by creating and encouraging patients to take advantage of opportunities such as support groups, social activities, and other therapeutic measures, as well as participating with patients where appropriate.
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary professionals to determine and provide the best possible care for patients.
- Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary mobile team to intervene during emergency mental health crisis through a 24/7 mobile unit
- Acting liaison between patient, clinician, and medication provider (pharmacy)
- Writing and updating patient records.
Professional Skills and Knowledge
- Demonstrates ability to conduct through clinical assessment and clear case formulation
- Demonstrates ability to recognize mental health priority conditions as per the mhGAP.
- Demonstrates ability to use standardized assessment tools.
- Demonstrates ability to provide empathic, evidence-based, brief, psychological first aid to a culturally diverse population.
- Demonstrate ability to intervene and de-escalate mental health emergencies and suicidal crises.
- Demonstrates ability to develop a consistent treatment plan clear objective.
- Demonstrates ability to monitor and evaluate health indicators related to medical prescriptions.
Skilled in or willing to build their capacity and knowledge in:
- Developing family-centred, goal and strength focused, recovery-oriented care plan.
- Mental health in complex emergencies (IASC guidelines, Psychological First Aid, mhGAP…).
- Biopsychosocial model in mental health.
- Community-based approach in mental health.
- Human rights-based approach in mental health.
- Evidence-based approach in psychiatric nursing.
- Knowledge about the predictable stresses of humanitarian aid work and the policies and practices needed to mitigate them.
