Amel Association International (Amel) is a Lebanese and non-sectarian NGO created in 1979. Amel works through 32 centers, 6 mobile medical units, 2 mobile education units, and 1 mobile protection unit, and for 43 years has supported the poorest regions of Lebanon, from Beirut and its South Suburbs to Mount Lebanon, Bekaa, and South Lebanon. Amel offers accessible services for all in the following fields: food security, health, education, protection, child protection, gender-based violence, livelihood, promotion, protection of human rights, and rural development.
The protection from Gender Based Violence project, aims to reduce the various forms of GBV in Amel’s community centers in BML “Hay Selloum” and South “Tyre & Bazourieh” through adapting a holistic intervention approach including provision of psychological, psychosocial support sessions and awareness-raising to the community members, adding to the development of innovative methodologies and initiatives involving local authorities in reducing GBV. The team contributes to the smooth implementation of activities for gender-based violence protection, in collaboration with the Medical, Mental Health, Child Protection, Livelihood, and Education programs, as well as other agencies and local authorities,
Job Purpose
The legal consultant will be working on Amel’s Gender Based Violence project alongside with other team members under the supervision of the GBV Project Coordinator and the GBV Program Coordinator. He/She is based in one of Amel’s centers “Hay Selloum, Tyre or Bazourieh”. He/She coordinates and reports on the implementation of the project.
Tasks & Responsibilities
Task 1: Planning and implementation responsibilities
- Conduct basic interviews with beneficiaries in order to assess legal and urgent protection needs;
- Provide legal information to beneficiaries on the main legal issues encountered;
- Conduct interviews and counseling on Legal Residency procedures (issuance and renewal);
- Plan and facilitate awareness sessions for the community on different legal topics;
- Attend meetings and workshops/training as requested by the Project Coordinator;
- Submit monthly reports to the Project Coordinator.
Task 2: Facilitation responsibilities
- Filing and maintaining case history reports
- Planning regular follow-ups to assess progress and additional needs;
- Represent beneficiaries in court when needed;
- Participate in monthly meetings with the team and the GBV Project Coordinator.
Other tasks
- Respect and abide by the organization's internal code of conduct;
- Adhere to the principles and guidance of the National SGBV Case Management and SOPs, including mandatory reporting requirements;
- Represent Amel Association, when requested and necessary;
- Attend and participate in local and capacity-building events as needed/Actively participate in training throughout the year;
- Be available to attend and participate in internal and external meetings;
- Meetings with other program staff are required and will be on a timely basis;
- Maintain positive relations with other team members;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the GBV Project Coordinator.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: BA in Law
- Experience: Lawyer in practice and Desirable 2 years of relevant experience, and experience in working with NGOs and women’s causes.
- Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to adhere to ethical considerations and principles in regard to working with vulnerable populations, ability to work as part of a team, and participate in all activities of the GBV-SRH Program.
