About ARM
Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) is a non-governmental organization working to dismantle systemic racism and achieve social, economic, and gender justice for migrant workers and racialized groups in Lebanon since 2011. Migrant Community Center (MCC) is a safer space for migrants living under Kafala. MCC works with migrant domestic workers to improve their living and working conditions and build their capacities to self-advocate for their rights as agents and leaders of change. Its programs include community-building, capacity-building, psychosocial wellbeing, community-led initiatives, and advocacy.
Job Purpose
To amplify the voices of migrant communities in Lebanon through providing logistical, technical, and capacity building support on the ground when migrant communities wish to mobilize and/or start and lead on their initiatives, and support ARM and MCC teams with communication with migrant communities.
Areas of Contribution & Related Accountabilities
Supporting Advocacy
- Lead on community organizing aspects of advocacy campaigns (ex freelance campaign, Kenyan Consulate case). This includes researching best practices and methodologies, coaching and following up with groups to ensure their successful implementation.
- Collaborate with the Advocacy Officer and Manager in the planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns with Migrant Domestic Workers.
- Supporting the Advocacy team / person leading on meetings with preparation, facilitation or note-taking, depending on what type of support is required
- Engage Migrant Domestic Workers in all aspects of advocacy work including strategy development, campaign actions and events;.
Supporting the Political Organizing Migrant Workers
- Acting as a focal point between ARM and groups of migrant workers who are organizing protests or other advocacy actions/initiatives, to support communities mobilizing around direct actions.
- Acting as a first responder when migrant workers organize protests: attending the protest and documenting it through photos, videos, and detailed notes on the demands raised, the support needed, and any security risks associated with the protests.
- Assisting migrant communities in their outreach efforts to invite migrant domestic workers to the protests and initiatives and to reach other activist networks.
- Coordinating meetings (invitations, logistics, minutes), between activists/NGOs/groups and migrant community activists and groups, who need external support with direct action or initiatives.
- Building the capacity of migrant activists and groups on community organizing tools through trainings, coaching, and shadowing.
- Advising the different teams in ARM on outreach and organizing with Migrant communities.
- Leading on the content creation of Community Activist Guide and its delivery to migrant activists and groups.
Supporting the centering of Migrant Workers in different media outlets
- Lead on the preparation and production of written and/or visual and audio content with Migrant workers with the aim to shift the mainstream depiction and perception of Migrant women in Lebanon. Ex: Women of the blame podcast.
- Support the Communications Specialist with content creation centering Migrant Domestic Workers and their narratives in different media outlets. Ex: Racism Monitor.
- Identify racist narratives and collaborate with the Communications Specialist to create counter-narratives;
Organizational Responsibilities
- Attend weekly team meetings and actively contribute to decision making;
- Attend General Staff Meetings and contribute to the development of the Advocacy Team’s presentation at those meetings;
- Properly document all advocacy outputs in a transparent and accessible manner for all ARM staff to be able to consult any information they require;
- Regularly communicate team decisions and rationale to ARM staff, and answer their questions.
Communications & Work Relationships
Internal Communication
- Regular contact with Advocacy Team and MCC Team
- Regular contact with MCC members and other migrant workers and groups.
- Regular contact with ARM team leaders
External Communication
- Occasional contact with other activists, activist groups, NGOs and other organisations
Framework, Boundaries, and Decision Making Authority
The jobholder suggests possible solutions to the Advocacy and Communications Manager for final decision-making, and takes necessary actions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- University degree in social sciences, public policy, migration, or any relevant field.
- At least 3 years of experience in community organizing, activism, direct action, nonprofit sector, or project management.
- Proven ability to have constructive, progressive and mutually respectful relations and networks with other staff, partners and varied organizations and institutions.
- Ability to anticipate the tasks required and be proactive about next steps.
- Ability and confidence to make decisions and take decisive action autonomously.
- Knowledge and understanding of human rights and migration issues, and the situation of migrant workers in Lebanon.
- Excellent Microsoft Office Skills.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Arabic. Basic spoken French is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strategic thinking, teamwork.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Very good time management skills, flexible, proactive, self-motivated.
