JOB DESCRIPTION

Context

Under general guidance of IOM Qatar CAS Head of Office and Sr. Operations Officer and the directsupervision of the Education Officer, this role encompasses delivering comprehensive English language instruction, Basic Computer Literacy, integrating United States’ civic education principles into curriculum, and addressing specialized topics crucial for our diverse student community who are waiting for resettlement to the United States. The Education Assistant (Teacher) will also be responsible for engaging with parents, contributing to thematic events, and supporting junior teachers. The Teacher will be responsible for informal education instruction to students ranging in age from age 16 and above. The ideal candidate should possess agility to adapt teaching methods and content to meet evolving student dynamics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • English Language Instruction:
    • Implement engaging and tailored English language lesson plans catering to diverse proficiency levels and learning styles.
    • Conduct regular assessments to evaluate student progress and tailor teaching strategies accordingly.
  • United States Civic Education Integration:
    • Using provided background material, integrate fundamental principles of United States civic education into the curriculum, aligning lessons with the American context and fostering understanding of democratic values and systems.
  • Basic Computer Literacy:
    • Introduce fundamental computer skills including operating systems, internet usage, email communication, and basic software applications, equipping guests with essential technological skills for everyday life and potential employment opportunities.
  • Specialized Curriculum:
    • Prepare and deliver age-appropriate modules on equality and respect for all, teaching basic financial literacy, and specialized general US geography sessions.
    • Create a safe and inclusive space to discuss sensitive topics while imparting knowledge and strategies for navigating these issues.
  • Adaptability and Agility:
    • Flexibility to adapt teaching approaches, content, and methodologies to meet the evolving needs and dynamics of the student community.
    • Employ innovative and interactive methods to engage students in discussions on sensitive topics.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Collaborate effectively with educators and staff to integrate interdisciplinary activities and promote holistic learning experiences.
    • Maintain open communication channels with students, parents, junior teachers, and stakeholders to foster a cohesive and supportive educational environment.
  • Support Services Referral:
    • Provide guidance and referrals to support services available during the resettlement process, assisting guests in accessing additional resources as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • – Bachelor’s degree in English Language, Education, or a related field with three years of relevant professional experience, or
  • – Complete High School degree from an accredited institution with five years of relevant professional experience
  • – Experience in non-formal camp education or education in emergencies is a plus.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
  • Extensive experience teaching advanced English to adult learners, preferably in a professional or career-oriented setting.
  • Proficiency in designing and delivering specialized professional English courses.
  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively engage with higher-level students from diverse professional backgrounds.
  • Ability to create advanced teaching materials tailored to professional language development.
  • Strong adaptability, agility, and innovative teaching methodologies to cater to diverse learning needs.
  • Strong work ethics and commitment to humanitarian principles.
Skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Good communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to draft clearly and concisely reports.
  • Good knowledge of Word, Excel, and Internet.
Languages
  • For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

  2. This selection process may be used to staff similar positions in various duty stations. Recommended candidates will remain eligible to be appointed in a similar position for a period of 24 months.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable.
