Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
UN Women is implementing its programmes in Lebanon across the humanitarian-development-peace and security nexus to support national efforts for the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. They focus on supporting women’s economic empowerment, women’s political participation, women’s engagement in peace and security, and community level work to address social norms and promote gender equality.

UN Women is seeking a consultant to deliver high quality images and videos of UN Women’s work in Lebanon with a special focus on its inclusive work with diverse women living across Lebanon, to enhance their resilience. The produced images and videos will document lives of women both Lebanese and non-Lebanese in several areas of Lebanon and the positive impact of UN Women projects on them as well as public events/activities/official visits.

The consultant will be reporting to the Communications and Advocacy Specialist, and will be supported by the Communications Assistant, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

The selected consultant will be responsible to deliver:

I- A photo bank of images of UN Women programmes in Lebanon. This includes:

  • Identifying themes for photo bank, based on materials provided by UN Women;
  • Implementation of agreed approach and organization of images in an easy to access/locate storage tool for UN Women.

Specific deliverables include:

  • A collection of photographs depicting UN Women’s work in Lebanon across its Programmes, collected, and organized in a photo bank. This should be in high resolution images. Photo size should not be less than 2.5 MB.

Types of photos expected:

  • Portrait format photos (faces)
  • Photos of people at public events/official visits/activities
  • Photos of groups of people in their habitual community environment

II- videos of UNW interventions/projects in Lebanon. This includes:

  • Develop timeline, script and shooting plan for the videos, in close consultation with relevant UN Women focal points. The initial concept and plan will be discussed and agreed in advance. Interviews and locations for shooting will be arranged with support from UN Women.
  • Video shooting of interviews and B-roll as discussed and agreed with UN Women.
  • Prepare a first cut of the video in Arabic with English subtitles for UN Women’s review and feedback. (3 rounds of edits included in the costs)
  • Finalize the videos according to feedback provided by UN Women.

The consultant should provide all B-roll and unedited footage of interviews to UN Women

  • Copyright of all footage and music in the video.
  • Submit the final versions of the video via file transfer in high-resolution as well as different formats for use on web and social media, including for YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Videos to be produced in Arabic with English subtitles
  • All new footage should be shot HD (16:9) 108i50 or 1080i60.
  • For cut piece a SPLIT TRACK AUDIO (natural sound on one track, voice, and music, of any, on the other track) should be submitted.
  • Compression H.264/MPEG4 or better video at 12000 kbps (minimum) or high-definition broadcast quality.
  • AAC Audio at 256 kpb

UN Women will provide the following support to the Consultant:

  • Briefing and detailed explanation of the kind of photos and videos needed and help in defining the best contents of photos/videos for different purposes;
  • Programme information and editorial guidance to the Consultant to enable him/her to understand the deliverables required and generate captions to embed in the photographs as well as subtitles/content in videos;
  • Access to programme sites and documents on the work UN Women implements in Lebanon.

UN Women acknowledges that the Consultant has the right to be credited and that their name should accompany all originals and reproductions of their work.

The consultant will:
Supply all videographic/photographic equipment necessary for the assigned coverage, as determined in consultation with the Supervisor (e.g. professional digital camera (for photography and videography), lenses and accessories);

Copyright:
All images and videos will pass to the exclusive ownership of UN Women including all use and distribution rights connected to them.
UN Women reserves all rights to the unedited photos and videos. Consultant must deliver all unedited photographs and videos on a hard drive at the end of the assignment period.
The consultant will fully apply UN Women brand identity. He will ensure that the final output is web-friendly for use on interactive UN websites and social media channels.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel
This is a home-based consultancy.
As part of this assignment, it is expected that the consultant will do field work to cover UNW events/projects across Lebanon according to timely needs.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Proven ability to produce high quality images and videos in the field of development-humanitarian response-peace and security.
  • A creative approach to highlighting the issues of gender equality in Lebanon in a visually appealing way.
  • Knowledge of gender and human rights issues is desirable

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in arts, photography, videography, film production, or a related field is required.
  • Bachelor's degree with 2 additional years of experience can be accepted in lieu of Master’s degree

Experience:

  • At least 2 years proven working experience in photography and videography with a demonstrated record of providing high-quality, creative work for clients.
  • Experience capturing images and developing videos for development organizations e.g. NGO, UN Agencies, etc., is required;
  • Experience on the development of products related to gender equality, women’s empowerment is an asset;
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong drive for results and capacity to work independently.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
  • Knowledge of any other UN official is an asset.
