Despite the heavy airstrikes carried out by the Israeli enemy during its aggression on Lebanon, targeting areas near Rafic Hariri International Airport, the airport remains fully operational, serving as Lebanon's vital link to the world.

Late last month, the Israeli military spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, declared on his account on the platform “X”: “We clearly announce: we will not allow hostile flights carrying weapons to land at Beirut Airport. Beirut Airport is a civilian airport and must remain so.”

In response, Lebanese authorities turned their focus to Beirut Airport. The caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, chaired a meeting at the Grand Serail dedicated to discussing the situation at Rafic Hariri International Airport. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Interior, Bassam Mawlawi, Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamieh, and Army Commander General Joseph Aoun.

The legitimate concerns about the potential targeting of the airport by the enemy remain, given Israel’s disregard for boundaries and the lack of clear information regarding its anticipated strikes. It remains unclear whether these strikes will be limited to the southern region or expand to other areas. Already, Israel has severed the land route between Lebanon and Syria with its air raids.

Following the security meeting, strict instructions were given to the airport security apparatus to heighten readiness, conduct thorough inspections, and prevent any breaches that could allow non-civilian aircraft to land. The army’s authority within the airport was also expanded to ensure it remains free of military activities.

But the question remains: are there any international guarantees to shield the airport from Israeli strikes? According to parliamentary sources, U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein has not provided firm guarantees to spare the airport from Israeli attacks, despite Mikati's insistence on his intervention. The U.S. State Department has reportedly instructed Israel to keep the roads leading to Beirut Airport open.

However, concerns persist: will these guarantees hold once all foreign nationals are evacuated? Have Mikati and the Army Commander received assurances to keep the airport safe and operational?
