Elon Musk’s Criticism of USAID
Elon Musk, in his comments, labeled USAID as a “criminal organization” and referred to it as a “nest of Marxist leftists who hate America.” This criticism was part of his broader agenda to reduce federal spending following Trump’s re-election, which included a focus on cutting international aid programs.
Consequences for Lebanon’s Development Projects
The decision to suspend USAID funding directly impacts Lebanon, as the agency managed over two-thirds of international aid directed to the country. Many American-funded initiatives, including those focused on education, healthcare, and development, are now in jeopardy. Thousands of students who were benefiting from scholarships and training programs are facing uncertainty, as are many civil society organizations that relied on this funding.
Among the affected initiatives, USAID’s Higher Education Capacity Development Program, which has benefitted over 16,000 Lebanese students across 10 universities, faces disruption. This program provided scholarships that covered up to 90% of tuition fees for students in need.
